Being a member of UCAB, it may seem a little silly that I had not been to a Homebrew event before last night. For those of you out there not familiar with Homebrew, it is the love child of not only the homebrew committee but also the students here at the College. Homebrew is basically a live show featuring local acts- bands, slam poets, stand up, solo artists, etc. Its a great way to spend an evening and get to hear some great music from the local scene.
Last night featured "Russian Folk Metal" a band comprised of one student of the College (bass) and two visitors from Russia (guitar and drums). The most interesting thing, aside from their original lyrics in Russian, was that they didn't exactly play "metal" so to speak. Instead they varied in style, moving from rock, to jazz, to pop, and back to chugging punk guitar rifts. Their song "strange night" had a great rhythm, and they even played their version of the Sex Pistols' "God Save The Queen" titled "Mother Anarchy". It was AWESOME, and aside from being one of only maybe two people there who understood the russian lyrics (of which i could only catch words such as "everyone" "strange" "night" and even, "meat"), they had a great set that really wowed the audience. I'll definitely be checking out more of Homebrew's events this year.
The best part about Homebrew is that they hold their events in Lodge 1 in the Sadler Center, where they not only have ample seating but a bar complete with 50 cent wing menu and beer on tap- and YES you can use flex! Good music, good friends, and your parents paying for your beer? What else can a student at the College ask for from a week night?
